The killers of Emmanuel Victor have been named. They are Inspector Lucky Obomerelu and Corporals Matthew Egwegwe and John Imeh. They were dismissed from the Nigeria police force and recommended for court trial. The police said they were indicted for misuse of firearms after an orderly room trial. The police denied that there were efforts to cover up the crime when the House of Representatives summoned the state police commissioner to appear before them. The officers were charged with murder at the Federal High Court Yenagoa on December 8, 2011.
Nigerians are watching the outcome of the trial with the hope that justice will be done and the culprits punished according to law as a deterrent to other trigger-happy policemen. It would be recalled that Emmanuel Victor was shot several times in front of his distraught mother on Sunday October 16, 2011 while returning from church. There was a huge outcry by citizens against the dastardly murder by the unconscionable policemen.
Emmanuel was killed for daring to condemn extortion and bribery at the checkpoint close to the church.
